Martina Hingis leads the Kastles against an Aces team that features World No. 1 Andy Roddick and 2013 Wimbledon champion Marion Bartoli. Roddick will be eager to erase memories of his last encounter with the Kastles, when his former team, the Springfield Lasers, lost to Washington 25-12 in the 2013 Mylan WTT Finals.

Six days after Hingis goes head-to-head against Bartoli in a battle of past Wimbledon champs, Venus Williams will meet 18-year-old American sensation Victoria Duval in Philadelphia. Duval grew up idolizing Venus and told the story of how the two met on an episode of The Tonight Show with Jay Leno last year (Video).
Washington's July 16 home match against the Texas Wild will be broadcasted nationally and regionally on three different channels. Tennis fans can tune in to Tennis Channel, CSN Washington or ESPN3 at 7 pm to see Venus and Hingis play doubles together for the first time ever.

Television coverage and live streaming are great, but nothing compares to catching a Kastles match live!

Tickets to see Venus and Hingis lead the Kastles on July 16 start at only $20 -- the cheapest they have ever been for a Kastles match featuring a Williams sister. Don't wait until they are all gone; secure your seats today at Ticketmaster.com.

Here's another clue that the franchise is looking forward to the start of the July 24th training camp.

They may be talking mini-camp in this June, 18th photo, but the July reference to the right says otherwise.

With July not quite here yet, one can surmise that the start of  training camp is definitely on the minds of folk out at Redskins park.

Back for another year, the CSA collectables and memorabilia show is returning this weekend at the Dulles Expo Center in Chantilly.

It's where we got a chance in 2012 to get RG3 fan reaction (and all the hoopla) before he was drafted by the Burgundy and Gold, and where we saw the likes of PacMan Jones, Sam Bradford, Mike Vick and other NFL stars and veterans meet the fans.

So, if you've recovered from last weekend's 4th of July celebration and you're looking for something to do this weekend, come out and meet your favorite players, see the legends, get some autographs signed, collect some gear and have a good time.

Here's this year's lineup which includes Super Bowl V Champion Linebacker Mike Curtis, LaVar Arrington, former Penn State Linebacker Greg Buttle, and a few of Washington Redskins players to boot.

Congrats to Czech Republic's Petra Kvitova, winner of Wimbledon 2014.  The talented tennis star easily defeated Eugenie Bouchard in under an hour - 6-3, 6-0 - Saturday to gain her second Wimbledon win.

On the men's side the world watched in angst as Norvak Djokovic defeated Wimbledon favorite Roger Federer in a five-set (6-7(7), 6-4, 7-6(4), 5-7, 6-4,) entertaining-driven contest.

The two men rallied for nearly four hours before Federer would fall to the Serb.  Djokovic regains his No. 1 ranking, a title he's not held since September 2013.

Congrats winners!

People at baseball games: say stuff, sleep, stack, sue

People at baseball games (let's just say sporting events in general) can be rude and insensitive. This includes commentators of such games, as well.

Isn't this what adults, all the time, tell their kids not to do - make fun of others?

The guy in the above picture sleeping, Andrew Rector, is suing the MLB, ESPN, and the game's announcers, for making fun of him during a broadcast of a Yankees v Red Sox game earlier this year. (Audio).

  • Being ridiculed in a national forum is tough, for any one, but at least he wasn't a victim of the Yankee Cup Stack while he was sleeping like this poor guy, back in 2011. (Should he have sued the guy behind him, and the guy who recorded the stacking?).

We're still not sure how people sleep with 50,000 fans around.  Hopefully, there isn't a larger issue here. Either they're doggone tired, drunk and passed out, or have a health condition; Narcolepsy, perhaps.

    Narcolepsy is defined as
... a neurological disorder that affects the control of sleep and wakefulness. People with narcolepsy experience excessive daytime sleepiness and intermittent, uncontrollable episodes of falling asleep during the daytime. These sudden sleep attacks may occur during any type of activity at any time of the day.
Then again, it may just be that the games, and the announcers, are just too boring.

In a Mystics Minute video, Washington Mystics' 6'4" center Kia Vaughn talks about the team's record and what needs to happen to improve the team's performance on the court.

The team experienced a four game losing streak before winning against San Antonio and Connecticut, but lost three straight games after those wins.

"We have to figure out some things, and do what we need to do.  It's been the little things that's been keeping us from winning games and finishing at the end of quarters", said Vaughn.  "We know what we need to do, so this road trip needs to be proven."

The Mystics 'proved' they have what it takes to be a good team Tuesday night by defeating the Chicago Sky, on the road, 72-65.

The team has just a few more away games,  facing Tulsa, Phoenix and Los Angeles, before the upcoming 2014 All-Star break.

Said Vaughn, "the Playoffs are where we need to get to, but right now we need to focus on our chemistry, and keep building, because we're a strong team capable of doing anything."

Mayweather, Maidana to tour-stop in DC to promote September 13th rematch

Eleven-time world champion Floyd "Money" Mayweather (46-0, 26 KOs) and former world champion Marcos "El Chino"Maidana (35-4, 31 KOs) are slated to make an appearance in the nation's capital to promote their upcoming rematch scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 13 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas live, and on SHOWTIME PPV®

Mayweather, 37, won by unanimous decision over Maidana during their first meeting earlier this year on May 3rd.

The pair will make a stop at Constitution Hall on Monday, July 14th at 7 pm.  Washington is the second in a five-city tour that includes New York, San Antonio, TX, and Chicago on July 15, culminating with a stop in Los Angeles on July 17 (Maidana's birthday).

    Fighter quotes:

"Marcos Maidana is a tough customer and he gave me a fight that had me work for the victory," said Mayweather. "His style is difficult at best, but with experience comes a way and will to win. I'm not one to give second chances in the ring, but I want to give the fans what they want to see. I will be as prepared as I always am when I step in the ring on September 13. I only see the outcome one way and that's another successful night for me and my team."

Mayweather was nominated this year for ESPYS Best Male Athlete.

"The rematch with Mayweather is the only fight that really motivates me," said thirty year-old Maidana. "I feel I earned it in the ring and Floyd owed it to me. I've already proved that I don't care if the man I have in front of me is the best pound-for-pound champion. I was close to ending his reign last time. On September 13 he will not get away undefeated."

Maidana defeated DC fighter DeMarcus 'Chop' Corley in 2010, and is coming off a 2013 win (unanimous decision) over Adrian Bronner.  Maidana lost to noted fighters Andreas Kotelnik (2012), Amir Khan (2012), and Devon Alexander (2012).

    Cleveland, he's coming home!

As you've probably heard, LeBron Raymone James, aka LBJ, is taking his talents back to Ohio despite the vitriol surrounding his decision to leave his hometown four years ago.  James' decision left a city torn, and spawned a hate-filled (and racist-like) letter by the Cavaliers' owner Dan Gilbert, in which he called James a "coward", as if James should have an undying allegiance to Gilbert's purse strings.

LeBron shown here, wearing one Championship ring, is going back to Cleveland.
Still, and as told to Sports Illustrated, LeBron shares that his affiliation to the city where he was born and raised "is bigger than basketball", and the bad behavior of hundreds of people.

    Remember this?

While many may find it hard to come to grips with his 'second-term decision', and while others just don't care either way, James explains his terms, his time, his decision - quite clearly.

"When I left Cleveland, I was on a mission. I was seeking championships, and we won two. But Miami already knew that feeling. Our city hasn’t had that feeling in a long, long, long time. My goal is still to win as many titles as possible, no question. But what’s most important for me is bringing one trophy back to Northeast Ohio.
I always believed that I’d return to Cleveland and finish my career there. I just didn’t know when. After the season, free agency wasn’t even a thought. But I have two boys and my wife, Savannah, is pregnant with a girl. I started thinking about what it would be like to raise my family in my hometown. I looked at other teams, but I wasn’t going to leave Miami for anywhere except Cleveland. The more time passed, the more it felt right. This is what makes me happy."

    Read more here.

LeBron has invoked the feelings of two very popular songs with his decision to return to Cleveland; Pharrell's 'Happy', and Drake's "We're Going Home", and has even proven to be the bigger person by "forgiving" his enemies by deciding to step on the home court of the Cleveland Cavaliers, for another term.

Cleveland, you should be proud... even if some of you don't deserve the King.

    Washington, we got Paul Pierce

Boston's and Jay-Z's former Brooklyn baller, Paul Pierce, changes clothes to become a Washington Wizard.

Pierce will bring his 17 years of NBA league experience to the Washington, DC team in exchange for the man Washington heavily relied on last season, Trevor Ariza.

Pierce averaged just shy of 14 points per game, last season, with the Brooklyn Nets - see him action - a stat that amazingly ranks closely to Ariza's.

    So, why the trade then?

You guessed it, moolah, dinero, grip, cash, credit.   The Wizards got a $8.5 million trade exception in the exchange that sent Ariza to the Houston Rockets in a four-year $32M deal.

SB Nation explains the deets by offering this:

The credit can be used to acquire any single player already under contract that makes $8.5 million or less without having to match salary. You can trade for a player making less than that amount, then later trade for someone making less than whatever's left on a different team. You can't acquire two players at once with one exception. You also can't combine trade exceptions or a trade exception and another mechanism like the mid-level exception.

Pierce becomes a Wizard in two-year deal worth $5M. A deal which he seems quite okay with.

Before the SHOWTIME tripleheader featuring Unified Super Lightweight World Champion Danny "Swift" Garcia taking on "Lightning" Rod Salka plus two world championship fights on Saturday, Aug. 9 from Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY will be host to a stacked lineup of undercard bouts featuring top East Coast prospects as well as the WBO Intercontinental Welterweight Championship title defense by Sadam "World Kid" Ali against Jeremy Bryan.

Also in action will be Anthony Peterson"Sir" Marcus BrownePrichard Colon and D'Mitrius Ballard.

Brooklyn born and bred Sadam "World Kid" Ali (19-0, 12 KOs) has been on a tear since his Golden Boy Promotions debut at Barclays Center against Jay Krupp in September of 2013. Since then, the 25-year-old 2008 U.S. Olympian has halted Jesus Selig and Michael Clark to run his perfect record to 19-0, and now as he defends his title, he sets his sights on Paterson, New Jersey's Jeremy Bryan (17-3, 7 KOs). A decorated amateur who won two National Golden Gloves titles and also defeated headliner Danny Garcia before turning pro, the 28-year-old Bryan has won three of his last four bouts, most recently defeating Yuir Ramanau and Issouf Kinda.

The brother of IBF Junior Welterweight World Champion Lamont Peterson, lightweight contender Anthony Peterson (33-1, 21 KOs) hopes to add his own title belt to the family trophy case in the coming year, but first he'll have to add to his three-fight winning streak against an opponent to be named on August 9. Owner of wins over Daniel Attah, Dominic Salcido and Marcos Leonardo Jimenez, the 29-year-old Washington, D.C. product is currently ranked 12th in the world by the IBF, and he's expecting to climb higher after this upcoming bout.

As he approaches his record seventh appearance at Barclays Center, 2012 U.S. Olympian"Sir" Marcus Browne (11-0, 8 KOs) is becoming synonymous with boxing's newest Mecca. Unbeaten as a professional, with four knockouts in the Barclays Center ring, the Staten Island native has shown that there's nothing like fighting in his own backyard. On August 9, this up-and-coming light heavyweight will meet Oakland, California's Paul Vazquez (10-5-1, 3 KO's) in his first 10-round bout.

Proudly representing his borough of Brooklyn will be super lightweight prospect Zachary Ochoa (7-0, 4 KOs). Appearing at Barclays Center for the third time, the 22-year-old Ochoa has showed style and savvy throughout his young career, and in his next test, scheduled for four rounds, he will battle it out with Palm Spring, California's Luis Cervantes (7-7-3, 2 KOs).

Puerto Rico's latest star on the rise, Orocovis' Prichard Colon (10-0, 10 KOs) is devastating in the ring, having ended each of his professional fights before the final bell. Just 21-years-old, Colon, who will face Washington, DC's Lenwood Dozier (9-6-1, 4 KO's) in an eight-round junior middleweight bout, is sure to thrill the fans as he makes his New York City debut.

Joining the Peterson brothers in representing the D.C. area, 21-year-old super middleweight phenom D'mitrius Ballard (5-0, 4 KOs) will open the show in a six-round bout against Hayti, Montana's Barry Trotter (2-1, 1 KO). A ferocious finisher with power in both hands, Ballard is coming off a second-round technical knockout over Quincy Miner in April.
